Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service
Commissioned studentencorps of the U.S. Public Health tafelgeschirrCommissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health ServiceHoused under the Department of Health and Human Services, officers in theCommissioned Corpsof the U.S. Public Health Service serve in a variety of health-related roles around the nation. behauptung health care professionals cooperate with government agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to promote the health and well-being of American citizens. History of the Commissioned Corps By order of President John Adams, the Commissioned Corpsemployed doctors in the Marine Hospital Service to take care of ill and injured sailors. The goal was to prevent the spread of disease as sailors re-entered the country from foreign locations. By 1871 America had become a complex place, and it became more difficult to administer health care to the Navy. The countrys fi rst surgeon general decided to simplify the equation by imposing military discipline on doctors of the Marine Hospital Service, setting them up with naval ranks and uniforms. Eventually, the growing needs of the nation led to greater responsibilities for the corps, which provided services to the general public including the control and prevention of disease. (The CDC wouldnt be conceived until 1946.) By 1912 its expanded scope earned the Marine Hospital Service the more apt title of Public Health Service, though the Commissioned Corps remains grounded in its naval roots as one of the two uniformed services that are not technically in the U.S. military. Requirements to Serve in theCommissioned Corps The two most important requirements for service with the Commissioned Corpsare education and licensure. Like the Armed Forces direct commissioning programs for medical professionals, the Corps doesnt take raw recruits they look for those who have already invested in an advanced educat ion and established themselves as civilian professionals. Some of the positions in the Commissioned Corps include PhysiciansRegistered Nurses (with bachelors or masters degree only)DentistsSocial workersPsychiatrists and psychologistsDietitians (bachelors to doctorate)Allied professions, such as dental hygienists and physician assistantsPharmacists Opportunities to join the Commissioned Corpsin one of these professions may vary from year to year depending on need. Potentialofficers must be citizens of the United States under the age of 44 and pass medical and physical examinations. Though recruited as civilian professionals, hopefuls must also be prepared to conform to height, weight, and grooming standards similar to the U.S. Armed Forces. Careers in the Commissioned Corps Unlike an enlistment in the military, the Commissioned Corps isnt something you can jump into right out of high school. But there are a few opportunities to start a career with the Corps for those who need a helping hand. Those already serving in the military may be able to transition to a career with USPHS through one of two educational programs. Aspiring physical therapists with a bachelors degree can apply to attend a doctoral program offered jointly by the Army and Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Theres also the Interservice Physician Assistant Program, which caters to the Public Health Service. As for civilians, students on their way to earning an appropriate degree can apply to serve as interns during school breaks, earning ensign (O1) pay and points toward vorrcken and retirement they can take with them if hired after graduation.

How to Maintain Your True Self in a Job Search
How to Maintain Your True Self in a Job SearchHow to Maintain Your True Self in a Job SearchJob seekers frequently get told they must convince hiring managers that they are the perfect match for a position. While this advice does have significant merit, following it should not come at the expense of compromising ones own standards and integrity. Youll increase the odds of finding genuinely satisfying work when both you and the employer have an accurate assessment of your abilities and career goals. Consider these ways in which you can maintain your true self and leise land a great job. Here are three ways to maintain your true self during a job search1. Be honest.Simply put, dont lie. Youll immediately take yourself out of consideration if an employer finds out (or be shamefully dismissed later if you happen to get hired). Besides, one fudge typically leads to another to cover. Soon, youll stressfully be trying to keep up appearances rather than confidently demonstrating your strength s.Similarly, resist the urge to mislead an interviewer. If she points out a perceived flaw, redirect the conversation. Briefly acknowledge the shortcoming, and then focus on why your unique background and accomplishments still make you a worthy candidate. Dazzle with genuine, engaging stories rather than half-hearted false statements.2. Seek meaningful work.Because job seeking can be a slow process, some hunters start adopting an Ill take anything attitude. This way of thinking, however, can be dangerous to your psyche and your career. Signing on with a company that operates in a way you find distasteful will make it difficult to go to work each day, and you may be compromising your reputation with respectable employers. Likewise, settling for something you dislike will make you feel defeated- and it will show. Each job you take is a stepping stone to your next job, so if you take a job you hate, youre making yourself more qualified to get into another job you hate, says Aricia Shaff er, MSE ofWoman In the Moon Productions and author ofUnlocking the Secrets of the Successful Career Seeker.Additionally, when you get into a job for which you are poorly matched, you generally wind up working with people you dont like, whom you have little in common with, and with whom you feel uncomfortable.Everything about the job feels wrong. That can lead not only to job dissatisfaction, but also to more health issues, more sick days, poorer job performance and less pay.Patience is a job searching virtue. Know your strengths and goals, and stick to finding roles that maximize them.3. Listen to your gut. Finally, remember that you know yourself best. If something about a potential job doesnt feel right, it probably isnt. This might mean negotiating for better terms, ignoring the schlussverkauf pitches of a hiring manager to get to the core of the role, or walking away because you realize the fit isnt good.As Shaffer notes, To thine own self be true is such a great maxim, but it ca n take a lifetime to figure that out. I think were so tied up in the expectations others have of us, the shoulds that are out there. We need to untangle ourselves, and the best way to do that is to listen to our instincts. When you go in to speak with a potential employer, tune in to how YOU are feeling. We get so caught up in what are they thinking of us that we forget- we are interviewing them as wellReaders, how do you maintain your true self when job searching? Study This morning ritual is linked to cancer and decreased fertility
Study This morning ritual is linked to cancer and decreased fertility Study This morning ritual is linked to cancer and decreased fertility Does your dentist tell you to floss every time you visit? Well now, you can have a rebuttal at the ready.Flossing is one of those daily chores thatâs just gross. Very few people enjoy removing the gunk from between their teeth. The visual is cringe-worthy, and life would be much better if it was something we didnât have to do at all.And now, this: New research suggests that flossing is more than just nasty. It can lead to decreased fertility, kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, low birth weight and effects on the immune system, all because youâre following your dentistâs orders. Why, you may ask?Oral-B Glide dental floss - likely that green-colored tube you picked up when you decided to try adulting - is one of the products that âcontribute to elevated levels in the body of toxic PFAS chemicals,â according to a press release from the Silent Spring Institute. PFAS can often be found in waterproof clothing or stain-proof carpeting - itâs a substance thatâs water- and grease-repellent.According to a study of 178 middle-aged women, published in the Journal of Exposure Science Environmental Epidemiology, flossing with Oral-B Glide is associated with higher levels of the PFAS called PFHxS in your blood. Researchers went a step further to test 18 different flosses for fluorine, a PFAS marker. All three Glide products that were tested came back positive for fluorine, as did some of the competitor flosses.âThe safety of the people who use our products is our top priority,â a representative for Oral-B Glideâs manufacturer told Elite Daily. âWe have confirmed none of the substances in the report are used in our dental floss. Our dental floss undergoes thorough safety testing and we stand behind the safety of all our products.âWhether you believe the scientists or the big corporation, sadly it doesnât matter - you do still have to floss. Illness-inducing substances arenât always a cop-out. All you have t o do is find a brand that doesnât have harmful chemicals in it, and you should be good to go. Just remember: your dentist will be so proud.

10 practical answers to 10 powerful questions
10 practical answers to 10 powerful questions 10 practical answers to 10 powerful questions The other day I received an email from a reader with 10 questions she wanted me to answer. No introduction. No small talk.Just a list of questions and âThanks for your timeâ at the bottom.Naturally, my first response was, âWhat?!âBut as I read the questions more carefully, I thought, âI can turn this into an article.â I was truly impressed by the quality of the questions of my reader, Mary.So I wrote back to thank her for the inspiration. Here are my answers:1. Whatâs the one quality that everyone must have?Persistence, perseverance, determination, grit - call it whatever you want. For centuries, humans have discovered thatâs the one quality that separates people who get what they want from the people who donât.Iâm not even talking about becoming successful. For example, the Stoics strived for achieving tranquility - not financial success or recognition. But living a tranquil life is hard. And it takes a lot of hard work to achieve a state of tranquility. You se e, persistence is what makes that possible. When you give up without a good reason, youâll never know how your life could end up.2. Whatâs the one book you suggest everyone read?Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.Iâve often recommended Manâs Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl, The Story Of My Life by Helen Keller, or On The Shortness Of Life by Seneca, but these books have already received enough attention in this space. The reason I mention Crime and Punishment is that itâs a book about thinking. Sure, itâs a novel, and itâs about murder. But the book goes so deep that you canât help but get touched by Dostoyevskyâs writing. This book needs to be read consecutively. Preferably, you want to read it for at least two hours a day. And donât read anything else during the time you read this book. Youâll never forget the period that you were reading it.3. Whatâs one powerful piece of advice for living a fulfilling life?Get clear on what you want.Peop le who always hesitate, canât make up their mind, and who are all over the place, will be left behind.Decide what you want. And be firm with your execution. Donât deviate from the path. For nothing and no one. If others canât accept that, they are not the right people in your life.4. Whatâs one piece of important financial advice?Donât try to make money.Thatâs because of a well-known paradox: He who tries too hard will fail. When you try hard to make money, youâll become unethical and focus on the wrong things. When you focus on providing genuine value, you will be rewarded for your help. But remember that you need money to eat and grow. Donât act like a charity.5. Whatâs one skill that everyone must have?Writing. Not because we write so many texts, emails, and messages. No, writing is thinking. So when you become a better writer, youâll also become a better thinker. How does one become a better writer? By writing more.6. Whatâs one thing that you regret starti ng late or wished you started earlier?Investing.Iâm not talking about stocks or real estate. Iâm talking about adopting the mindset of an investor.I never thought of everything you do in life as investing. Working out, reading, taking classes, spending time with people who matter to you- itâs all investing because these activities have a return.Buying a fancy car, going to restaurants multiple times a week, mindless online shopping - these are things that have little to no return.7. Whatâs one thing you learned the hard way?Doing something is different than reading about it.Sometimes you read about something that sounds nice. Starting a business, moving to a specific country, working remotely, etc.I always read and heard stories about how great it is to live in London. Then, I actually did it. And then, I found that many people in the city struggled to pay rent, started relationships only because they could save on their living expenses, and kept doing useless shit so the y didnât feel depressed.Of course, this is not true for everyone in big cities. But itâs the way many people my age live. And thatâs something none of them will admit.8. Whatâs one thing that should never be forgotten?Youâre never alone.Life gets hard sometimes. And for some of us, our natural instinct is to solve everything by ourselves.Donât do that. No one in the history of mankind became happy or successful without help. Realize that youâre not alone.Seek out people who share the same values as you. Become friends. They will help you when the time is right. And vice versa.9. Whatâs one thing we must not think twice on spending? This is obvious, but my answer is âbooksâ.A few years ago, I acted like a cheapskate when it came to books.I remember picking up Antifragile by Nassim Taleb in a bookstore once. I decided I couldnât spend 10 bucks on that book. I probably went to a Starbucks after that to drop $5 on a fancy drink.Anyway, I recently bought Antifrag ile. It made a big impact on my thinking.I was an idiot for not buying/reading that book earlier. Do yourself a favor, if you see a book that might help you- buy it.10. Whatâs your definition of life in 50 words? No one knows what they are doing.Thatâs life in 7 words. And itâs something I truly believe in. Itâs what keeps me sane.In the past, I always believed that everybody had it more figured out than me. But it turns out that no one has definite answers to the biggest challenges in life. Why are we here? Whatâs the meaning of life? What should you do?No one knows. We can all guess! And thatâs what a lot of people do. Iâm the same. However, we must know that everyone you see around you is no different from you. That means weâre all the same. Weâre trying to figure things out. Thatâs precisely what this article was about. This article first appeared on Darius Foroux.

Know Your Greatest Strengths
Know Your Greatest Strengths Know Your Greatest Strengths Research says those who capitalize on their inherent strengths are more profitable and more productive. Find out which are yours and how to put them to use. Each of us has particular strengths: talents in thinking, habitual ways we approach problems that give us energy to solve them. Research of more than two million people by the Gallup Organization has shown that organizations that capitalize on individual strengths are more likely to be profitable and productive than others. Can your work be more productive (and lucrative) if you leverage your strengths?Focusing on fixing individual weaknesses creates mediocrity; instead, recognizing varied talents, encouraging them through training, then leveraging them to overcome challenges is the basis for excellence and fulfillment. Hereâs a perfect example:Steve was a high-powered executive in the energy industry who recently was laid off. When we examined the reasons he was let go and compared them with an assessment of his talents, he real ized that he had failed to bring to the job one of his greatest strengths - empathy.Raised in a British boarding school, Steve had been taught that it was weak to be so feelings oriented. In the workplace, however, understanding colleaguesâ feelings can be an important quality that lends cohesion to a team. Itâs also a useful warning gauge when a company is in trouble.âI knew what everyone was feeling and so could have positioned myself better, but I ignored the information,â Steve admitted. If he had leveraged his empathetic talents, he might very well still have a job.Recent discoveries in neuroscience help explain why different people solve problems so differently. When weâre born, our brains have the potential to fire in any direction. Through relationships, experiences and genetics, they begin to fire in certain patterns. Because the brain cells that fire together wire together, they begin to make pathways; the next time you think, youâre more likely to think again in that particular sequence. Then, during puberty, your brain sheds the capacity you havenât used. By the time youâre an adult, your brain is wired to think in certain ways, which is why using your talents creates excellence because you can do it faster and better than people who havenât been thinking that way their whole lives. However, as Steve discovered to his detriment, we often cut ourselves off from our own special abilities. We may be focused on our flaws and unable to perceive our strengths. Or we may take them for granted. Or, like Steve, we may harbor pre conceived ideas of the ârightâ way to think and therefore disable ourselves. What are your strengths? There are many ways to understand your strengths. At Professional Thinking Partners, we often focus on âdomains of competence,â which describe four broad categories of thinking. (Once you hear what they are, itâs pretty easy for you to intuit which your mind typically uses.) Research by Herrmann Internation al of a sample of over half a million people has found that 60 percent of us have two of these four; 30 percent have three; 6 percent have one; and only 4 percent, all four. They are:Analytic: Concerned with data, facts, and numbers; focused on being âlogicalâ and rational. With money, concerned with ways to count. With time, concerned with the present. Procedural: Concerned with processes, operationalizing, logistics, tactics. With money, concerned with ways to save. With time, concerned with the past, with how things have been done previously. Relational: Concerned with feelings, morale, teamwork, helping people grow. With money, concerned with ways to help. Time isnât so important. Innovative: Concerned with newness, possibilities, strategy, âbig picture.â With money, concerned with ways to spend to do exciting new things. With time, concerned with the future. Notice your strongest domain(s). Which are your concerns in any given situation? Are you, like âRuth,â energized by change, bored by numbers and routine, highly innovative and have no use for âpeople problemsâ? Sheâs one of the 6 percent of the population strong in just one domain (in her case, the Innovative one). Or are you more like âDanâ: great at numbers and following routines and highly uncomfortable with feelings and newness (analytic and procedural)? There is no right or wrong. Just notice whatâs true for you.Your dominant ways of thinking are the raw materials you bring to every situation in which you find yourself in. The more you put yourself in situations where theyâre needed, the better youâll be at the task. For instance, you probably donât want me to be the brainstorm person in product development, as I lack innovative thinking. But Iâm great at partnering with people who come up with the big ideas and helping them bring the idea into reality wit h my analytic, procedural and relational talents.Stuck? When youâre stuck, ask yourself: If my strength in ____ were a person, what would s/he advise right now? When Steve did this self-analysis, he realized that he was extremely strong at relational thinking but had been trained to avoid it. In effect, he was cutting himself off from his greatest capacity. He began to give himself permission to use his strengths and quickly found a job using his amazing capacity to relate to others. Now heâs using those strengths to excel in a very challenging job fraught with all kinds of cultural and religious sensitivities in the Middle East.

Feeld wants to be workplace Tinder, so what could possibly go wrong
Feeld wants to be workplace Tinder, so what could possibly go wrong Feeld wants to be workplace Tinder, so what could possibly go wrong Would you reveal your feelings for a workplace crush?Would you do it through workplace chat? With a new bot called Feeld for Slack, checking yes or no to the fraught question of âdo you like me?â will be all too easy.In many places, Slackâs instant messaging app has already taken over email as the dominant mode of communication; with Feeld, Slack can now be used as a Tinder.Feeld wants us to âembrace feelingsâ at work through its Slack integration. Once itâs installed, you can tell your office crush that you have feelings for them by @âing them by name.If your crush reciprocates by @âing you back, Feeld will let you both know, so you can one day tell your children you met through a bot. How does Feeld work? All of this will likely work - if you can get it into your company Slack. The ease with which one person can integrate a dating bot into a companyâs communications, however willing or unwilling those employees may feel about the idea, does raise many human resources red flags.Feeldâs manifesto does note that âconsent is key,â âwork is work,â and âDiscrimination sucks (and is illegal),â so the company is not unaware of the dangers its app is unleashing.Itâs just forging ahead, regardless. Thereâs comfort in the formulaic yes/no safety of Feeldâs bot that treats desire as a problem that can be solved. From Feeldâs perspective, dating is already so complicated and contradictory - why not save the user time?Feeld founder Dimo Trifonov said he created the app, then-called 3nder, as a way to help people explore polyamory after his girlfriend told him she had sexual feelings for other women.âThe app was a way to show her that there are many people like her and like me,â he told Fast Company. Now, with Feeldâs bot, workplaces that use Slack can now bring desire into professional contexts, but does any workplace actually want this feature?Feeld infiltrates the Washington PostLadders reached out to Feeld to find out if there are any workplaces actually integrating the Feeld bot into their Slacks. We will update when we get a response.Until then, we briefly had a live test case on Monday afternoon during the fraught moments that Feeld was activated for The Washington Postâs Slack. One Post social media editor made a play on words for the paperâs new motto, âDemocracy dies in darkness,â joking that âDemocracy dies in thirstiness.âDavid Farenthold, the Postâs Pulitzer-prize-winning investigative reporter had a different take: âThis is why i donât use Slack. Every time I log in, itâs all GIFs and hormones.â The Washington Post's Slack just sent this to the entire newsroom. Democracy dies in thirstiness. pic.twitter.com/2Rj8rNm9zv - S C R E A M PARK ?? (@GenePark) May 1, 2017Journalists on Twitter speculated whether it was âsome random admin who got the request and just OKed itâ or something more nefarious was at play.Lisa Bonos, the Postâs dating editor, later said she was the culprit who had introduced the bot for âabout 30 secondsâ as part of a future story. Trifonov told Bonos that Feeld would work better in startups or âzero-hierarchy companiesâ than at the Post. Although Trifonov argued that having a workplace crush is not illegal, acting upon it sometimes can be, and startups are less likely to have human resources departments. For about 30 seconds, I almost tricked the @washingtonpost newsroom into confessing their work crushes to a @feeldCo @Slack bot. pic.twitter.com/5wmjb5mcmC - Lisa Bonos (@lisabonos) May 1, 2017Slack has always been a distractionIn some ways, it makes sense why Feeld would choose Slack as its open platform of choice to test out its dating Lord of the Flies.Slack is already purposefully merging work and play with GIFs, emoji and smartphone notifications that can grab your attention at a momentâs notice - even when youâre at home.As one Atlantic writer warned, Slackâs new emoji status feature is a cutesy way to let your co-workers know what youâre doing at all times. Itâs also one more way for Slack to take up more of your attention on a messaging app and away from your own responsibilities: âpeople could conceivably feel pressured to describe what theyâre up to at all times, in order to explain to their colleagues why they might not immediately reply to a Slack message.âThrough its international Slack group, Feeld is indicating its hope for global reach where channels are popping up for specific cities. The conversation s in the newly created #newyork dating channel are pretty tame so far with individual members sharing their favorite neighborhood restaurants as icebreakers. For now, it feels like a Reddit thread, or a middle school dance floor where boys and girls eye each other from the punch bowl. Time will tell if Feeld moves beyond a quirky novelty of a human resources nightmare.Does anyone who is not a journalist actually want to test this out in an office? If any of you hear of this happening, email me. (Donât Slack me.)

5 Ways to Get Your Cover Letter Noticed in 2014
5 Ways to Get Your Cover Letter Noticed in 2014 5 Ways to Get Your Cover Letter Noticed in 2014 According Lisa Vaas, writing for The Ladders, fewer than 10 percent of HR departments actually scan cover letters, preferring to look at an applicantâs resume first. However, that doesnât mean you can dispense with the cover letter entirely. âMost hiring managers have denied interviews to candidates qualified by their resumes,â says Vaas, âbut disqualified by additional information in their cover letters.â Your cover letter is your chance to sell yourself to an employer. Here are five ways to rise above the stack and get noticed: Start Strong Cover letters and resumes are under an extreme amount of pressure to hook the reader within seconds. Hiring managers have limited attention, and if your letter doesnât give them a reason to keep reading in the first line- really, the first five or six words of the first line- youâll have already lost them. Most cover letters begin with a variation on the standard âIâm writing to express my enthusiasm for this position.â Ditch the tired old boilerplate and try something different. One of the best hooks is simply dropping a relevant name, but you can also lead with an intriguing statement or bold claim. Just make sure you can back it up! Solve a Problem Drake Baer, writing for Fast Company, bemoans the lack of professionalism amongst applicants. He has several tips for writing better cover letters, including becoming a problem solver for your prospective employer. Baer writes, âThe task for the applicant, then, is to make the convincing case that you have the solution: Show that you have the track record to fit the responsibilities and make the life of the person who hired you way easier.â Focus on Them Andy Burkhardt has a simple trick for standing out: Your letter isnât about you, itâs about your prospective employer and what you can do for them. âIf you focus your cover letter on them first and within that context discuss how your talents, experience, and attitude will enhance the work theyâre trying to do,â Burkhardt advises, âyouâll already be ahead of the game.â Take Action A Call to Action, or CTA, is a statement at the end of a piece of writing that motivates the reader to do something. At the end of most blog posts, for example, the CTA encourages readers to engage in the comments. You can incorporate a CTA into your cover letter by writing âI look forward to hearing from you soonâ or a similar statement. Vivian Giang of Business Insider encourages applicants to reverse the call to action: âTell the reader what youre planning on doing next - for example, calling in a week or two to follow up.â This kind of statement encourages the hiring manager to expect your call and reinforces the impression that you are an applicant who isnât afraid to take action. Proofread Cover letters and resumes highlight your job skills and achievements, but unlike resumes, which are usually written in bullet points, cover letters also show off your writing skills. Brisk, easy-to-read, and well-organized paragraphs are the hallmarks of good business writing, so pay attention to both the content and form of your cover letter. The easiest and best way to proofread your letter is by reading it out loud. Youâll pick up on any clumsy phrases or missed words as you read. Itâs also a good idea to have a friend look over your letter, but if you donât have an English teacher on speed dial, try using an automated grammar checker. One final word of advice: If youâre emailing your resume, the body of the email is your cover letter, so donât attach it as a separate document. What are your job search resolutions for 2014? How do I approach my boss about a holiday bonus
How do I approach my boss about a holiday bonus How do I approach my boss about a holiday bonus âBank of Dadâ is a weekly column which seeks to answer questions about how to manage money when you have a family. Want to ask about college savings accounts, affordable date night ideas, or where to buy toys on the cheap? Submit a question to Bankofdad@fatherly.com. Want advice on what stocks are safe bets? Ask your broker. And then tell us. Weâd love to know. Itâs bonus season and Iâm sort of banking on one but I donât know if my company is even doing that. Theyâve avoided the conversation all together. How do I go about asking my boss about a holiday bonus? Is there a way to do so tactfully? - Colin S., PhiladelphiaNo one wants to end up like Clark Griswold in National Lampoonâs Christmas Vacation, angrily wondering what happened to the money that was supposed to help get you through the holiday season.Unfortunately, more managers are beginning to look like Frank Shirley, Griswoldâs stingy boss. The recruiting firm Spherion Staffing Services released a survey of employees this week in which nearly half the respondents said they donât expect their company to dish out a holiday bonus this year. Of those that do, most expect to receive less than $500. So it helps to be sober about your expectations.Bonuses are a form of discretionary spending for most companies, so theyâre more likely to happen when the company has had a good year. But getting one isnât just a matter of good luck, either. A certain level of assertiveness can go a long way.A 2017 employer survey by the staffing firm Accounting Principals found that workers who actually asked for a monetary reward were more likely to get one. It certainly helps if you can point to concrete youâve done that go above and beyond whatâs expected. For example, respondents to the Accounting Principals questionnaire said staying motivated and having a positive disposition were the two most important factors in getting a bonus. Forty-two percent cited a willingness to take on extra responsibilities as another determinant. This is one time when tooting your own horn, at least a little bit, isnât such a bad idea. Showing that you deserve a bonus is more powerful than simply telling your boss you want one.Who knows? You may end up with something better than a membership to the Jelly of the Month Club.Itâs the end of the year and Iâm doing some financial housekeeping. What steps I can take now to reduce my 2018 tax bill? - Charles P., St. LouisYou might be surprised at how much you can shrink your tax liability by making a few last-minute maneuvers. The more deductions you can rack up before the year comes to a close, the better. Here are a few of the more common ones you might consider:1. Mind you withholdingsBecause the TCJA lowered individual tax rates, a lot of workers saw a smaller federal withholding from their paycheck in 2018. Nice perk, right? The problem is that the government overshot the mark for some employees, putting them at risk of an u nder-payment penalty. So itâs worth using the IRSâs withholding calculator to see where you stand. If you havenât had enough tax taken out during the year, you can make an estimated tax payment using IRS Form 1040-ES or ask your HR department to have more tax taken out of your last couple paychecks, says Kitty Bressington, a fee-only advisor with Linden Financial Consultants in Pittsford, New York2. Maximize retirement account contributionsMost people are nowhere near the annual $18,500 contribution limit for 401(k) and 403(b) retirement plans, much less the $24,500 limit for those over age 50. So if youâre well below that threshold, nowâs the time to boost your tax-deductible contributions. âIf you have the cash, go into HR and throw 100% of your last paycheck into a 401(k),â says Bressington.3. Put more into your HSAFamilies who have a high-deductible health plan are eligible to use health savings accounts, which allow you to make tax-deductible contr ibutions as well as tax-free withdrawals for qualified expenses. Itâs the holy grail of savings vehicles. Yet a lot of folks donât realize that you can kick in money of your own, on top of what your employer may put in each month, says Bressington. For those with a family health plan, the annual limit is $6,900 in 2018, so you might want to top off your contributions now.4. Pay extra on student loansIf you have an income-based repayment plan for your loans, you may want to make an extra payment before the end of December. The IRS offers a student loan tax deduction on the first $2,500 of interest you pay on eligible loans. If you havenât maxed it out yet, nowâs your chance.5. Use stock losses to your advantageThat the stock market has been relatively flat this year isnât exactly great news. But it does give you the opportunity to âharvestâ your capital losses. If you sell a poor-performing stock that youâre ready to let go of anyway, you can count the loss agai nst your capital gains for the year, thus reducing your tax bill. And if you still like a stock that happens to be in a rut, you can sell it and harvest your losses as long as you wait 31 days to buy more shares, adds Bressington.6. Strategize your charitable givingFewer people will be itemizing their deductions this year since the standard deduction nearly doubled. In order to get a tax break on charitable deductions, it may be better for some people to combine two yearâs worth of giving into a single year. That way, youâre making enough contributions in one calendar year to surpass the standard deduction. But it only makes sense if you have some extra money to work with. âBunching can be a good strategy as long as you manage your cash flow,â says Bressington. This article was originally published on Fatherly.
